WHITEN YOUR SMILE

The Questions Behind Tooth Whitening

There are many causes behind tooth staining. Certain medicines, tooth trauma, root fillings and even foods and beverages can cause tooth discoloration over time. Some discolorations are superficial while others are internal. However, both can be effectively treated by a dentist. Professional whitening is the best option to safely lighten discolored teeth.

How does whitening work?

The carbamide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide freely pass through enamel and dentin and permeates to all parts of the tooth. These peroxides break down into oxygen radicals, which then migrate between the enamel prisms, breaking down any colored molecules that result in tooth discoloration. The internal tooth color is made lighter while the structure of the tooth is not altered. Studies have shown the effectiveness of peroxides in whitening teeth.

Will whitening affect bond strength?

Existing bonds are not weakened by whitening agents. However, it is recommended that 7-10 days elapse after whitening before bonding is done.

How long does whitening last?

Whitening results are typically very stable. However, depending on the patient's diet and lifestyle habits, whitening may need to be redone periodically.

Will whitening cause tooth sensitivity?

Tooth sensitivity is a common side effect of whitening. This sensitivity is transient and should dissipate after the whitening process is completed. Even so the products used in our office contain potassium nitrate and fluoride desensitizing agents that help reduce tooth sensitivity.

Will whitening cause problems by weakening the tooth's enamel?

Studies have shown that whitening with Opalescence PF will actually reduce sensitivity, provide anti-caries benefits, increase enamel hardness, and improve overall enamel health.

What whitening systems are available?

In-office Whitening: Opalescence Boost PF
Take-home System: Opalescence PF and Opalescence Treswhite Supreme-Prefilled Disposable trays

IMPORTANT: Whitening treatments should only be done under dental supervision!
